Baby Dream Meaning

A Jungian perspective on the baby in dreams: new potential.

A surrealist painted emblem of the dream symbol Baby.

A baby is the quintessential symbol of 'new potential,' the birth of a new level of being, and the'start of a process' that is both divine and extremely vulnerable. It represents the 'Divine Child' archetype: the future Self that is currently in its most nascent and 'needy' form. To dream of a baby is to be given a 'sacred child' to nurture and protect.

In dreams, a glowing or 'wise' baby signifies a high-level spiritual potential that has been born in your psyche and which holds the key to your future wholeness. A crying or neglected baby indicates that a 'new' part of your life or a major creative project is suffering from a lack of attention and is in danger of 'dying' before it can grow. Finding a baby in a basket points toward a 'miraculous' new beginning that has been 'delivered' to you from the unconscious sea.

For example

If you dream of carrying a baby that is impossibly heavy, it represents a 'new' responsibility or a creative work that is far more 'massive' and significant than you initially realized. If you forget your baby somewhere, your psyche is warning you that you are currently in danger of 'losing' your most important and vulnerable new possibility through negligence and a lack of ego-consciousness.

Questions to ask about this dream

The meaning lives in your dream, not the dictionary. Before reaching for an interpretation, look at what actually happened:

What does this symbol mean in your dreams?

A page like this can only read the baby in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
