Mother Dream Meaning
A Jungian perspective on the mother in dreams: nurturing/devouring.
The mother is a foundational symbol of the 'Great Mother' archetype, representing the power that both gives life and, if too strong, can 'stifle' and 'devour' individual growth. She is the source of all nurturing, but also the 'womb' that can become a 'tomb' of regression. To dream of the mother is to connect with the most basic, 'biological' and 'emotional' foundations of your existence.
In dreams, a nurturing mother signifies a state of psychological 'safety' and a feeling of being supported by the 'universe' itself. A 'devouring' or terrifying mother indicates a struggle for independence and a fear of being 'swallowed' by family obligations or by your own passive, regressive needs. A 'dead' mother points towards a loss of nurturing or the need to find your own 'inner' mothering capacity.
For instance, if you dream of your mother as a queen, it represents her (or the mother-principle) as the 'ruling' influence over your current emotional world. If you are a child again in your mother's arms, your psyche is warning you that you are currently seeking an escape from the 'harsh' realities of adult life and are longing for a pre-conscious state of protected innocence.
Questions to ask about this dream
The meaning lives in your dream, not the dictionary. Before reaching for an interpretation, look at what actually happened:
- Was it your actual mother, a figure who felt like her, or a stranger who mothered you?
- How did she behave toward you, and how did you respond?
- Did she seem as she is now, as she once was, or as she never was?
- What in your life currently needs nurturing, or is smothering you?
- What did you want from her in the dream?
What does this symbol mean in your dreams?
A page like this can only read the mother in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
