Death Dream Meaning
A Jungian perspective on death in dreams: transformation.
Death is the quintessential symbol of 'Transformation,' representing the 'Ending of One State' so that another may eventually occur. it is not 'Non-existence' but the 'Threshold' of change, where the 'Gross' matter is 'sacrificed' for the 'Subtle' spirit. To dream of death is to face the 'Ultimate Change' and the 'Rebirth' that follows.
In dreams, yours own death signifies a state of major 'ego-dissolution' and a successful 'surrender' to a higher level of being. The death of another person points toward the 'dying' of what they represent inside you. A 'peaceful' death indicates a state of high 'readiness' for the next phase of yours evolution. 'Resurrection' after death suggests a successful 'renewal' and a 'higher' level of integration.
For instance, if you dream of a 'skeleton' (death) that is handing you a 'flower,' it represents yours 'dying' process as something that is currently 'bringing forth' a beautiful and 'eternal' value. If you are 'running' from death, your psyche is warning you that you are currently 'fearing' a necessary and 'fated' change that is trying to 'guide' you into yours own destiny through the 'door' of the unknown.
Questions to ask about this dream
The meaning lives in your dream, not the dictionary. Before reaching for an interpretation, look at what actually happened:
- Who died in the dream: you, someone you know, a stranger?
- What was the feeling around the death: grief, relief, indifference, peace?
- Was the death an ending, or did the dream continue past it?
- Is something in your waking life ending or asking to end: a phase, a role, a relationship?
- How did the other people in the dream respond?
What does this symbol mean in your dreams?
A page like this can only read death in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
