There is a moment, and most people have had it at least once, when something inside a dream says: wait.

The staircase goes up into a room you know does not exist. A person who died years ago is making coffee. You are back at school, and you are forty. For a second the dream goes thin, and a thought arrives that is unlike the other thoughts in the dream, because it is about the dream: this is not real. I am asleep. I am dreaming this.

That thought is lucidity. Everything else in lucid dreaming, the flying, the control, the conversations with dream characters, the practice of skills and the ending of nightmares, is built on that one instant of recognition. And the instant, it turns out, can be trained.

This is a long guide, because the subject deserves one. It covers what lucid dreaming is and is not, what the science has actually established, how common it is, whether it is safe, and then, in detail, how to do it. The through-line is the thing the research keeps landing on and beginners keep skipping: that lucid dreaming begins with a dream journal, and mostly stays there.

What lucid dreaming is

A lucid dream is a dream in which you know, while it is happening, that you are dreaming. That is the whole definition. The word was coined by the Dutch psychiatrist Frederik van Eeden in 1913, in a paper describing 352 of his own dreams, and he used “lucid” in the sense of clear-minded: the mind is awake to its situation inside the dream. [2]

Three things are worth separating out at the start, because they are constantly confused.

Lucidity is not control. Knowing you are dreaming and being able to change the dream are different abilities. Many lucid dreams involve full awareness and almost no control: you know it is a dream, and it carries on regardless. In the largest phenomenological survey of lucid dreamers, the ability to control the dream was reported as partial far more often than complete, and awareness routinely came without it. [22] Control is a skill that is learned after lucidity, not the same thing as it.

Lucidity is a spectrum. At the low end is a faint suspicion, quickly lost. At the high end is full waking clarity: you remember your own name, your bed, the date, what you intended to do in the dream, and you reason about it as clearly as you would awake. Most lucid dreams sit somewhere in between. Researchers have built scales to measure this, and the practical takeaway is that “I was sort of aware” counts, and is where everyone starts. [7]

Lucid dreaming is not a different kind of sleep. It happens mostly during REM sleep, the same stage in which ordinary vivid dreams happen. What differs is what the brain is doing during that stage, which we come to below.

Aristotle described the phenomenon in the fourth century BC: “often when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself is but a dream.” [1] Tibetan Buddhist dream yoga has cultivated it deliberately for at least a thousand years. But for most of the twentieth century, Western sleep science treated reports of lucid dreams as unreliable, because a report made after waking cannot prove that the awareness existed during the dream. The problem was how to signal out of a dream while still inside it.

How it was proven

The solution was elegant. During REM sleep, nearly every muscle in the body is paralysed, which is why you do not act out your dreams. The eyes are the exception. In 1975 the English psychologist Keith Hearne had a lucid dreamer named Alan Worsley agree, before sleep, to move his eyes left-right-left-right eight times the moment he became lucid. The polygraph recorded the signal, in unmistakable REM sleep, with the rest of the body paralysed. [3]

Stephen LaBerge at Stanford independently did the same a few years later and published it in 1981, with the eye signals time-locked to the sleep recording. [4] A dreamer had sent a message out of a dream. Lucid dreaming was real, it happened in REM, and it could be studied.

Forty years on, the experiment has become a conversation. In 2021 four laboratories in four countries reported that sleeping, lucid dreamers could hear arithmetic questions spoken to them, work out the answer inside the dream, and reply with eye movements or facial twitches, in real time, while still asleep. [11] The dreamers later described how the questions had arrived: as a voice from a car radio, as narration over the dream, as text. One answered a question they had not heard while asleep by waking and recalling it from the dream. This is now the standard method for studying what happens inside dreams, and it exists only because lucid dreamers can act as a channel.

How common it is

Rarer than ordinary dreaming, far more common than most people assume.

A 2016 meta-analysis pooled fifty years of surveys across 34 studies and found that roughly half of adults have had at least one lucid dream in their life, and roughly a quarter have them once a month or more. [5] A representative German survey found almost identical numbers: 51% lifetime, about 20% monthly. [6]

They are most common in children and adolescents and decline with age, though people who practise can reverse that trend. Frequent lucid dreamers score higher on openness to experience, report thinner boundaries between waking and dream, and above all remember more dreams. [34] That last correlation is the important one for anyone who wants to learn, and we will come back to it.

Some populations have lucid dreams far more often without trying. People with narcolepsy, whose REM sleep is fragmented and intrudes on waking, report lucid dreaming at much higher rates than controls. [33] Regular meditators do too, and the connection between mindfulness in the day and lucidity at night is one of the more robust findings in the field. [19] Both point at the same mechanism: whatever keeps a sliver of self-monitoring alive during REM.

What the brain is doing

Ordinary REM dreaming is a strange state. The visual and emotional systems run hot; the feeling in a dream is often stronger than in waking life. But the prefrontal regions that handle self-reflection, working memory, and the question “does this make sense?” are relatively quiet. That is why you accept, in a dream, that your kitchen has become a train. The critic is off duty.

Lucidity is the critic clocking back in. In 2009 Ursula Voss and colleagues recorded EEG from lucid dreamers signalling from inside REM and found a distinct pattern: activity in the 40 Hz gamma band over the frontal lobes, with a degree of coherence between brain regions that lay between ordinary REM and waking. They described lucid dreaming as a hybrid state, with features of both. [7]

Functional imaging sharpened the picture. In a 2012 case study, a lucid dreamer signalling inside an fMRI scanner showed activation, relative to his own non-lucid REM, in exactly the regions ordinary dreaming turns down: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the frontopolar cortex, the precuneus, and parts of the parietal lobe involved in self-awareness. [8] Another study had lucid dreamers clench their fists inside the dream and found the sensorimotor cortex lighting up on the corresponding side, as if the movement were real. [12]

Perhaps the most telling finding is structural. People who lucid dream frequently have more grey matter in the frontopolar cortex, the very front of the brain, than people who rarely do, and that region is more active in them when they perform a metacognitive task awake: thinking about their own thinking. [10] Lucid dreaming, in other words, looks like ordinary metacognition surviving into sleep. A 2019 review of the whole field concluded much the same: lucidity depends on frontal and parietal networks that support self-reflection, and the reason it is trainable is that those networks can be strengthened. [9] Stimulating the frontal lobes with a weak electrical current during REM sleep has been shown to nudge dream awareness upward, which is the same conclusion arrived at from the other direction. [24]

None of this is needed to lucid dream. But it explains why the techniques below work, and it should reassure anyone worried that lucid dreaming is somehow unnatural. It is your ordinary daytime capacity for noticing yourself, lit for a few minutes at night.

Why people want to

The reasons are more varied than “flying,” though flying is a good one.

To end nightmares. This is the best-supported clinical use. In a pilot trial, people with chronic nightmares were taught lucid dreaming over a few sessions; nightmare frequency fell, and the fall did not depend on whether they actually became lucid, which suggests that even the idea that you can face a dream changes your relationship to it. [27] Lucid dreaming has since been trialled as an add-on to Gestalt therapy for nightmares, with reductions in nightmare frequency and anxiety, and the technique’s logic is straightforward: a nightmare is a dream you cannot get out of, and lucidity is the exit. [29] [28]

To practise. Because dreamed movement activates the motor cortex, practising a skill in a lucid dream is not nothing. In a pilot study, people who practised a coin-tossing task inside a lucid dream improved at it more than people who did not. [25] Among German athletes, a meaningful minority already used lucid dreams for training on purpose. [26] The effect is small and the studies are small, but it is real enough that sports psychologists take it seriously.

For creativity and problem-solving. Lucid dreamers routinely report asking the dream for an idea and getting one. The evidence here is mostly anecdotal, but the mechanism is plausible: dreaming is hyper-associative, and lucidity lets you direct it.

To grieve, or to meet someone. Many lucid dreamers seek out a dead parent, a lost friend, a version of themselves. Read the dream of a dead father talking and you will see why: a lucid meeting with a dream figure can be one of the most moving experiences a person has.

For the experience itself. Waking up inside a world that your own mind is generating, in full colour, with the physics negotiable, is a wonder. That reason needs no defence.

Is lucid dreaming safe?

Mostly, yes, with two honest caveats.

The long-standing worry, that lucid dreaming blurs the line between dream and reality, has no support in the population data: lucid dreamers as a group are not worse at reality-testing, and if anything the practice sharpens the habit of asking “is this real?” [9] The frequency of lucid dreaming in healthy adults is not associated with poorer mental health.

The two caveats are about how you cultivate it, and they come from researchers who want the field to be careful. [30] [31]

First, some induction techniques fragment sleep. Waking yourself in the early hours to do a technique, then going back to sleep, works for lucidity precisely because it disrupts the sleep cycle, and disrupted sleep has costs. If you are sleep-deprived, if you have a sleep disorder, or if your mood is fragile, do not use methods that involve deliberate waking. The journal-based methods below cost you nothing.

Second, some people who pursue lucid dreaming intensely, especially with the wake-initiated techniques, encounter sleep paralysis or hypnagogic hallucinations: waking with the body still paralysed, sometimes with a felt presence in the room. These are harmless and pass within a minute or two, but they are frightening the first time. Knowing they can happen is most of the cure.

There is also a small, thoughtful literature arguing that people with dissociative tendencies, or with certain psychiatric conditions, should approach lucid dreaming cautiously, because a state that depends on questioning reality may not be what they need. [30] If that describes you, talk to someone who knows your situation first.

For everyone else: the foundation of the practice is remembering your dreams and paying attention to them. Nobody was ever harmed by that.

The foundation: a dream journal

Now the part beginners skip.

Every serious lucid dreaming method, from LaBerge’s 1990 handbook to the largest induction trials, starts the same way: keep a dream journal, and get your recall up before anything else. [15] [16] There are five reasons, and they compound.

1. You cannot become lucid in a dream you do not remember

This sounds like a joke, but it is the first and biggest obstacle. Lucidity often arrives as a brief flicker, in a dream that is otherwise ordinary, and a flicker in a dream you forget on waking simply did not happen as far as your learning is concerned. People who begin a lucid dreaming practice with poor recall regularly report, weeks in, that they “have not had a single one,” when what has happened is that they had several and lost them.

Recall is also the strongest single predictor of lucid dream frequency in the survey data. [34] [21] Frequent lucid dreamers are, before anything else, frequent rememberers.

The good news is that recall responds to practice faster than almost anything else in this guide. In a controlled study, people who kept a dream log for a fortnight roughly doubled the number of dreams they recalled compared with their own retrospective estimate; the act of intending to record is itself what raises recall. [20] Most people go from one or two remembered dreams a week to one or two a night within a month. Our guide to remembering your dreams covers the waking-moment technique in detail.

2. The journal is where you find your dream signs

A dream sign is anything that recurs in your dreams and would, if you noticed it, tell you that you are dreaming. LaBerge coined the term and built his whole method around it. [15] Dream signs are personal, which is why no list on the internet can give you yours. You have to find them, and the only place they can be found is a record of your own dreams.

They fall into a few families:

After a few weeks of journaling, you read back through and you count. In most journals, three or four signs account for a surprising share of all dreams. Those are your targets. This is the reason Lunar Log keeps people, places and symbols as linked profiles rather than plain text: each one becomes a page that lists every dream it appeared in, which is exactly the dream-sign census a lucid dreamer needs, done automatically.

3. Writing dreams down trains the noticing

A dream journal is not just storage. The act of writing a dream forces you to attend to its details, its inconsistencies, the moments where it did not add up. Over weeks, this changes how you experience dreams while they are happening: you start to notice the seams. Lucid dreamers describe a kind of critical attitude developing in their dreams, and the German psychologist Paul Tholey, who developed one of the earliest systematic induction methods, made this “critical-reflective attitude” the centre of his technique. [14] The journal is where the attitude is trained.

4. The journal is the feedback loop

Every technique below is a hypothesis you are testing on yourself. Did the reality check work? Did the early-morning wake help or wreck your sleep? Did you get lucid and lose it after five seconds, or hold it for two minutes? Did lucidity come from a dream sign, or from a nightmare, or from nowhere? Without a record, you are guessing. With one, you can see, after a month, that your lucid dreams cluster on weekend mornings, or after evenings without alcohol, or in dreams featuring a particular place, and adjust.

5. The journal is the pre-sleep ritual

The most effective induction technique in the research, MILD, works by setting an intention just before sleep to remember to notice the next time you dream. That intention is far more concrete when it is built from your own recent dreams: you reread last night’s entry, you find the moment you should have noticed, and you rehearse noticing it. The journal supplies the material. Without it, the intention is abstract, and abstract intentions do not survive sleep onset.

So: everything starts here. If you do nothing else from this guide, keep a journal for a month. Some proportion of people become lucid from that alone.

How to lucid dream, step by step

Here is the method, in the order that the evidence and thirty years of practitioner experience suggest.

Step 1: Recall first (weeks 1 to 2)

Keep a journal for two weeks before you attempt any induction technique. Your target is remembering at least one dream most nights. If you are below that, stay on this step: nothing else will work well until you are.

The waking-moment routine, in short:

  1. Before sleep, tell yourself you will remember your dreams. This is not mystical; it is a memory intention, and it measurably works. [20]
  2. On waking, do not move, do not open your eyes, do not reach for anything. Stay in the position you woke in and ask: what was just happening?
  3. Follow any fragment backwards. A feeling, a colour, a person. The rest often comes.
  4. Record immediately, before the day arrives. Voice is fastest; speaking a dream takes seconds and captures more than typing does at that hour, which is the case for voice dream journaling.
  5. Do not judge or edit. Fragments count. “Something about a bridge, and I was anxious” is an entry.

Step 2: Find your dream signs (week 2 onward)

At the end of each week, read your entries and tag what recurs. Be specific. “Water” is a category; “the flooded basement of my parents’ house” is a dream sign. Write your top three somewhere you will see them.

Dream signs this month: the old office (5 dreams), my brother as a child (3), reading text that will not stay still (3).

Now you have targets. Every one of the techniques below is aimed at those three.

Step 3: Reality checks, done properly

A reality check is a small test you perform during the day to determine whether you are awake. The idea is that if you do it habitually and sincerely while awake, you will eventually do it in a dream, where it will fail, and the failure will make you lucid.

Most people do reality checks wrong, and the research reflects it: reality testing on its own, with no other technique, has weak evidence. [13] [16] The problem is that people perform the check mechanically, already knowing the answer. A reality check done without genuine doubt trains you to do it in dreams without genuine doubt too, where you will conclude you are awake and carry on.

The fix has two parts. First, choose checks that actually fail in dreams. Second, do them at moments linked to your dream signs, and really ask the question.

Checks that reliably fail in dreams:

Do a check whenever one of your dream signs shows up in waking life: every time you see your brother, every time you read something, every time you walk into an office. Ten to fifteen times a day, each one taking five seconds, each one with the honest question attached. The check is a habit; the doubt is the point.

Step 4: MILD, the best-evidenced technique

MILD stands for Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams. It was developed by LaBerge and is, across the whole research literature, the induction method with the most consistent support. [13] [16] [17] [18]

It is a memory technique. Specifically, it uses prospective memory, the kind you use to remember to post a letter tomorrow, and points it at the next dream. Done as it was tested in the largest trials:

  1. As you lie down to sleep, or after a brief wake in the early morning, recall a dream, ideally the most recent one from your journal.
  2. Find the moment in that dream where you should have realised you were dreaming: a dream sign, an impossibility, a seam.
  3. Repeat a short phrase with full intention: “Next time I’m dreaming, I will remember that I’m dreaming.” Mean it, the way you would mean a promise.
  4. Imagine yourself back in the recalled dream, arriving at the seam, and this time noticing. See yourself becoming lucid. Feel what it would be like.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you drift off with the intention as your last thought, or until you have done it for a few minutes and feel it is set.

The National Australian Lucid Dream Induction Study, one of the two large field trials of the technique, found something practical: the success rate depended strongly on falling asleep quickly after the exercise. Participants who fell asleep within about five minutes of finishing MILD had a lucid dream that night nearly half the time. [16] Do it with the light off, lying in your sleep position, without a phone. The intention has to be the last thing.

The follow-up International Lucid Dream Induction Study, with several hundred participants, confirmed MILD’s effect and found that it did not harm sleep quality. [17]

Step 5: Wake Back to Bed (WBTB)

Lucid dreams overwhelmingly happen in the last third of the night, when REM periods are longest and most intense. WBTB exploits this. You sleep for five or six hours, wake briefly, stay up for a short while, then return to sleep into a REM-rich stretch with a fresh mind.

Combined with MILD, this is the most effective protocol in the literature; in the Australian trial the combination of reality checks, WBTB and MILD produced the highest weekly rate of lucid dreams. [16] The trade-off is the one raised above: you are deliberately fragmenting your sleep. Do it once or twice a week, on nights you can sleep in, and never during a stretch when you need to be rested.

Step 6: SSILD

Senses Initiated Lucid Dream, a technique that came out of the Chinese lucid dreaming community in the 2000s and was tested head to head with MILD in the international study, where it performed just as well. [17] [18] It is usually done after a WBTB wake.

Lying in bed, cycle attention through three senses, gently and without expectation:

  1. Sight. With eyes closed, notice the darkness behind your eyelids. Do not try to see anything.
  2. Hearing. Notice sounds: the room, your breathing, the faint ringing of silence.
  3. Body. Notice sensations: the weight of the blanket, warmth, tingling.

Do a few fast cycles of a few seconds each, then several slow cycles of half a minute or more per sense. Then stop and go to sleep in whatever position is comfortable. That is the whole thing. It feels like nothing, which is part of why it works: it primes sensory attention without keeping you awake. Interestingly, the study found that combining SSILD with MILD gave no extra benefit over either alone; pick one per night.

Step 7: WILD, for later

Wake Initiated Lucid Dreaming means entering the dream directly from wakefulness without a break in awareness. It is the technique of Tibetan dream yoga and the one most people find hardest. You lie still after a WBTB wake, let the body fall asleep while the mind stays gently alert, pass through the hypnagogic imagery, and step into the dream as it forms.

It is worth knowing about, but it is not where to start. It is the technique most associated with sleep paralysis, it requires a kind of relaxed attention that takes practice to find, and most people who succeed at WILD do so after they have already had lucid dreams by other means. Get your first few lucid dreams with MILD. Then, if you want, explore.

What about supplements?

You will encounter them. The one with real evidence is galantamine, a cholinesterase inhibitor used in dementia care, which in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial roughly tripled the proportion of participants who had a lucid dream on a given night when taken during a WBTB wake alongside MILD. [23] It is a prescription drug in many countries, it has side effects, it disrupts sleep, and it should not be taken casually or without medical advice. Vitamin B6 has been trialled and modestly increases dream recall and vividness rather than lucidity itself. [35] The honest summary: a working technique plus a good journal gets most people there, and drugs are a research tool, not a shortcut.

Once you are lucid

The first time, most people wake up within seconds. The excitement does it. Here is what experienced lucid dreamers do to stay, and what to do with the time.

Stay calm. Lucidity arrives with a rush, and the rush wakes you. Take a breath in the dream and say, plainly, “I am dreaming.” State it, do not shout it.

Engage the senses. The single most reliable stabiliser is to touch things: rub your hands together, feel the ground, run your palm along a wall. Look closely at a detail. Spin around slowly. The dream steadies when you feed it sensation. Many lucid dreamers speak aloud: “increase clarity.”

Have one plan. Decide, before sleep, one thing you will do when lucid. Just one. Fly. Find a door and open it. Ask a dream figure a question. Doing something concrete pulls you deeper into the dream; standing around admiring it tends to end it.

Expect time to behave oddly. Counting in a lucid dream takes about as long as counting awake, but physical tasks take longer, and dreams of minutes can contain what feels like much more. [32]

Do not fight the dream. Control in lucid dreams works better through expectation than through force. If you want to fly, do not strain; expect the ground to release you. If a scene resists, change it by turning around or walking through a door rather than by willing it to change.

When it fades, which it will, either rub your hands or spin, or let it go and wake with the memory intact. Then, before anything else, record it. A lucid dream that is not journaled teaches you nothing.

If it is a nightmare, and you become lucid inside it, you now have choices you did not have before. You can leave. You can fly away. Or, and this is what the nightmare therapies teach, you can turn around and face whatever is chasing you, ask it what it wants, and watch it change. Most lucid dreamers who do this describe the pursuer shrinking, softening, or turning into something that makes sense. [28]

Common problems

“I have journaled for a month and had nothing.” Check three things. Is your recall actually up, to most nights? If not, that is the whole problem. Are you doing MILD as the last thing before sleep, or scrolling afterwards? Have you tried a WBTB night? Most people who stall are missing one of the three.

“I get lucid and wake up instantly.” Normal, and it passes. Rehearse your stabilising routine awake so it is automatic. Set the intention “when I become lucid I will rub my hands and stay calm” as part of MILD.

“I get lucid and immediately lose it.” Also normal. The dream carries on and you get absorbed back in. Repeating “I am dreaming” every few seconds at first helps, as does having a plan.

“My reality checks pass in dreams.” You are doing them by rote. Slow them down awake. Attach the honest question. Switch to the nose pinch, which is harder to fool.

“WBTB ruins my sleep.” Then stop doing it, at least on weeknights. MILD at bedtime plus a good journal is slower but works, and there is no rule that says you have to do this quickly.

“I had sleep paralysis and it scared me.” It is harmless, it passes, and knowing what it is defuses most of the fear. If it recurs and distresses you, drop the wake-initiated techniques and stick to MILD at bedtime.

“I had a lucid dream once and cannot repeat it.” Read the journal entry. What was the trigger? What kind of dream was it, what time did you wake, what was going on the day before? The conditions for one lucid dream are the conditions for the next.

Most people who follow this get their first lucid dream inside the month. Some get it in week one from recall alone. Some take three months. All of them end the month with a dream journal, a set of dream signs, and better recall than they have had since childhood, which is worth having on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Is lucid dreaming real? Yes. It has been verified in sleep laboratories since the late 1970s by pre-agreed eye signals sent from inside REM sleep, and more recently by two-way conversations between dreamers and researchers during sleep. [4] [11]

How long does it take to learn? It varies enormously. With daily journaling and MILD, many people have a first lucid dream within a few weeks. Consistency of practice, and above all dream recall, matter far more than any specific technique.

Can everyone learn it? Most people can have lucid dreams; around half already have without trying. [5] Whether everyone can have them regularly is less clear; frequency varies with recall, personality and practice. Almost everyone can raise their frequency from wherever it starts.

Is lucid dreaming dangerous? Not in itself. The cautions concern specific induction methods that fragment sleep, and people with certain conditions for whom questioning reality is not helpful. See the safety section above. [30] [31]

Does lucid dreaming affect sleep quality? The large induction trials found no harm to sleep quality from MILD at bedtime. Techniques that involve waking in the night do reduce sleep continuity, which is why they should be used sparingly. [17]

What is the difference between a lucid dream and a vivid dream? Vividness is about how intense and detailed the dream is. Lucidity is about knowing it is a dream while it happens. A dream can be vivid without being lucid, and lucid without being especially vivid.

Can you get stuck in a lucid dream? No. Dreams end when the REM period ends or when you wake, and lucid dreams are no exception. The film-inspired fear of being trapped has no basis in the sleep science.

Do reality checks actually work? On their own, weakly. Combined with a dream journal, dream signs and MILD, they contribute. The key is doing them with genuine doubt rather than by rote. [13] [16]

Is dream journaling really necessary? It is the single most important part. It raises recall, it identifies your dream signs, it supplies the material for MILD, and it is your only way of knowing what is working. Every major induction study has participants keep one.

Can lucid dreaming help with nightmares? Yes; it is the best-evidenced therapeutic use. Learning that you can recognise and change a nightmare reduces nightmare frequency, even for people who do not fully succeed at becoming lucid. [27] [28]

What is the best lucid dreaming technique? MILD has the most consistent evidence. Combined with a brief early-morning wake, it is the most effective protocol tested. SSILD performs comparably. All of them depend on good dream recall first. [16] [17] [18]


Lucidity is not a trick. It is your ordinary capacity for noticing where you are, carried a little further into the night than it usually goes. The people who have it most often are the ones who remember their dreams, pay attention to them, and write them down. Start there, and the rest tends to follow.
