Flying Dream Meaning

A Jungian perspective on flying in dreams: ascension.

A surrealist painted emblem of the dream symbol Flying.

Flying is the symbol of 'Ascension,' representing the 'Ego's' ability to rise above the mundane world and achieve 'Spiritual Freedom' or 'Psychological Perspective.' it is the 'Bird's Eye View' of the psyche and the capacity to 'transcend' yours earthly limits. To dream of flying is to experience yours own 'sublimity'.

In dreams, smooth and effortless flying signifies a state of high 'inflation' (in a positive sense) or a successful 'escape' from a heavy or 'trapping' life-situation. 'Struggling' to fly or falling from the air points toward a failure of yours 'ideals' or an 'over-reaching' of yours ego that has lost its 'grounding' in reality (Icarus). Flying too high suggests a state of 'dissociation' from the 'earthy' truths of the body.

For instance, if you dream of flying over yours 'own house,' it represents yours awareness of your daily life from a 'higher' and more 'objective' perspective. If yours 'wings' are made of wax, your psyche is warning you that yours 'spiritual' flight is currently based on 'unstable' and 'fragile' ideas that will 'melt' under the 'heat' of actual reality.

What does this symbol mean in your dreams?

A page like this can only read flying in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
