Mirror Dream Meaning

A Jungian perspective on the mirror in dreams: self-reflection.

A surrealist painted emblem of the dream symbol Mirror.

A mirror is the ultimate symbol of the 'confrontation with the shadow' and the process of self-seeing (Self-reflection). It represents the capacity of the soul to see its own reflection and to withdraw its projections from the outer world. In dreams, the condition of the mirror and what is reflected back are of the highest importance for psychological growth.

In dreams, looking into a mirror and seeing someone else suggests that you are currently 'projecting' a part of yourself (either shadow or hero) onto others and need to 'reclaim' that image as your own. A cracked or distorted mirror indicates a fragmented sense of self or a 'broken' ability to see yourself clearly and objectively. If there is no reflection at all, your psyche is warning you that your current ego-identity is 'empty' or that you have lost your connection to your true Self.

For instance, if you dream of a mirror that shows you your own future, it represents your 'Self' guiding you toward your potential and showing you the 'destiny' that is already written in your psychological structure. If you are smashing a mirror, it signifies a violent rejection of your current self-image and a desperate, perhaps destructive, desire to break free from the patterns of your past.

Questions to ask about this dream

The meaning lives in your dream, not the dictionary. Before reaching for an interpretation, look at what actually happened:

What does this symbol mean in your dreams?

A page like this can only read the mirror in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
