Father Dream Meaning

A Jungian perspective on the father in dreams: authority/law.

A surrealist painted emblem of the dream symbol Father.

The father is the symbol of the 'Great Father' archetype, representing order, social law, authority, and the capacity for external achievement. He is the 'spirit' that provides the structure and the boundaries for the 'matter' (the mother). To dream of the father is to confront the 'rules' of the world and your own relationship with authority and power.

In dreams, a supportive father signifies a healthy relationship with your own 'inner authority' and an ability to navigate the social world with confidence. A tyrannical or punishing father indicates a conflict with a too-rigid moral standard or a feeling of being 'crushed' by the demands of the collective law. A 'missing' father points toward a lack of internal structure and a need to develop your own 'protective' and 'ordering' principles.

For example

If you dream of your father leading you into a dark forest, it represents your 'spirit' guide helping you move into the unknown parts of your own unconscious with the safety of 'structure.' If you are fighting your father, your psyche is highlighting a major struggle for individual 'identity' and an attempt to overthrow an old, perhaps outmoded, 'internal law' to make room for your own truth.

Questions to ask about this dream

The meaning lives in your dream, not the dictionary. Before reaching for an interpretation, look at what actually happened:

What does this symbol mean in your dreams?

A page like this can only read the father in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
