Airplane Dream Meaning

A Jungian perspective on the airplane in dreams: transcendence.

A surrealist painted emblem of the dream symbol Airplane.

An airplane represents the desire for transcendence, high-flying ideas, and the ability to rise above the details of earthly and emotional life. It is the 'flight of the spirit' to a higher mental state. However, it can also manifest as 'ego inflation': being so high above reality that you lose touch with the ground and the needs of the body.

In dreams, a smooth flight signifies that your high-level plans and spiritual aspirations are currently in harmony. Turbulence suggests that your lofty ideas are being challenged by the 'winds' of unconscious emotion. A plane crash represents a violent 'return to earth' where a grandiose idea or an over-inflated ego is suddenly and painfully brought back to reality.

For example, if you dream of flying a small plane perfectly over a mountain range, it suggests you have achieved a high degree of spiritual autonomy. If, however, you are a passenger on a plane that is falling out of the sky, your psyche is warning you that a collective 'ideal' you have signed onto is unsustainable and you are about to face a major psychological 'descent'.

The meaning lives in your dream, not the dictionary. Before reaching for an interpretation, look at what actually happened:

What does this symbol mean in your dreams?

A page like this can only read the airplane in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
