Travel and being late in dreams

Vehicles in dreams are ways of moving through life, and the dream is usually interested in one thing: who is in control of them. A car the dreamer drives is their own direction and drive; a train runs on rails someone else laid; an airplane lifts the dreamer out of the everyday altogether, on a schedule not their own. Missing the flight, losing the way, or arriving late to something that mattered all describe a life whose timing has slipped out of the dreamer's hands.

Bridges are the transitional image here: a passage between one state and another, over water that represents whatever lies beneath the crossing. Dreams of a bridge that sways, breaks, or never quite reaches the far side tend to arrive mid-transition, when the old ground is gone and the new is not yet solid.

Being lost is the purest form of the theme. The dreamer is somewhere, and does not know where, and the landmarks that should orient them have gone. Jung would read it as the ego losing its bearings in a larger psyche, which is uncomfortable and often, in the long run, the beginning of finding a truer direction.
