Dream Symbols
Fire, floods and disasters in dreams
Disaster dreams are the psyche at full volume. Where a symbol like a key or a bridge speaks quietly, a tsunami or an earthquake announces that something structural is giving way, and that the dreamer's ordinary defenses are not going to be enough. They tend to appear at life's fault lines: a diagnosis, a separation, a move, a belief that has stopped holding.
Each element has its own character. Fire transforms and destroys at once, and a burning house is the self being gutted so that it can be rebuilt. Flood and tsunami are emotion at a scale that overwhelms the ground it lands on. A tornado is chaos from above, sudden and spinning, with a calm center the dreamer can almost never reach. An earthquake takes away the one thing assumed to be fixed, the ground itself.
The end of the world, the apocalypse dream, is the largest version: not a prophecy, but the end of a world, the one the dreamer has been living in, and the frightening, necessary clearing that comes before a new one can be built.
