The nature of the pursuer provides crucial information about what is being avoided. Being chased by a wild animal often points to repressed primal instincts or sexual energy. Being pursued by a dark, sinister figure typically represents neglected negative emotions like rage, jealousy, or grief. The terror in the dream stems from the ego's belief that if it is caught, it will be destroyed. In reality, the unconscious is relentlessly pursuing the ego to force an integration of this disowned energy, which is necessary for psychological wholeness.
The Jungian solution to a chase dream is counter-intuitive: the dreamer must eventually stop running, turn around, and face the pursuer.
