Infidelity Dream Meaning

A Jungian perspective on infidelity in dreams: betrayal of inner values.

A surrealist painted emblem of the dream symbol Infidelity.

Dreams of infidelity—whether the dreamer is cheating or being cheated on—are rarely about actual waking-life betrayal. In Jungian psychology, these dreams symbolize a profound internal betrayal of one's own core values, commitments, or the inner masculine/feminine balance. It points to a division within the psyche where the ego is engaging with energies or attitudes that are fundamentally 'unfaithful' to the true path of the Self.

If the dreamer is the one cheating, it often suggests they are compromising their integrity for short-term gain, neglecting their true passions, or ignoring the needs of their soul (the inner partner) in favor of superficial pursuits. If the dreamer is being cheated on, it may represent feelings of self-abandonment, low self-worth, or the projection of their own untrustworthy shadow traits onto their partner. It can also signify a disconnect between the conscious mind and the anima/animus.

Integrating the theme of infidelity requires rigorous internal honesty. The dreamer must ask: 'In what way am I betraying myself? What core value am I cheating on?' The psychological task is to restore inner fidelity. This involves realigning waking-life actions with authentic inner beliefs, withdrawing projections from external partners, and recommitting to the difficult but necessary work of individuation and honoring the whole Self.

A page like this can only read infidelity in isolation. In a real journal it arrives somewhere: a particular night, certain people, a mood, often other dreams it has visited before. That history is where interpretation starts meaning something.
